Science confirms: Babysitting improves life expectancy

Some time ago, there was extremely gratifying news for all grandparents who often babysit. That is because, according to the Berlin Aging Study, it leads to a longer life. They have also published excerpts from the report in the Journal of Evolution and Human Behavior, which was widely acclaimed.

Reduces the stress level

Researchers conducted a survey of 500 people over the age of 70. The study discovered that those who repeatedly took care of children had fewer health risks. In other words – babysitting can increase life expectancy.

However, we should emphasize that parents are not included in the equation. It was only about people who could babysit every now and then.

“There is a link between providing this care and reducing stress. If providing this care to [grand kids] and others…is one way that we can actually reduce stress, then these activities should be of benefit to folks who are grandparents and provide this care,” said Ronan Factora, a doctor at the world-famous Cleveland Clinic, according to Shareably.

Ronan also added that factors such as socializing – for example with friends – and staying physically active, are even more important in achieving a pleasant and long-lasting happy life.

Deserves a mention

“For retired people, it’s hard to feel needed,” said Dr. Factora. “Babysitting your grandkids is a brilliant way of maintaining the positive emotion flowing.”

The results of this study will probably not surprise many of you. I always suspected there was a connection, but when such wonderful and detailed conclusions are backed up by trusted researchers, it deserves a mention!

Nowadays, there is no better feeling than spending time with my grandchildren – and my guess is that most grandparents agree.
