Challenge: Can you solve this middle school math problem – without a calculator?

The older you get, the more important it is to take care of yourself. Regular exercise and a good diet are a must – however, the fact remains that it is just as important to keep your brain in shape. A good way to keep your brain sharp is through mind-teasers. The most common ones are perhaps Crosswords and Sudoku, neither is better or worse than the other.

Trying to remember middle school math

Another way that really works out those brain cells is plain school math problems. Lately, there’s been a lot of challenges involving math that adults try to solve – and fail miserably.

You get to test yourself and how much you remember while competing against your younger self a little, which is always as fun.

Can you solve this without a calculator?

Here is today’s challenge.

In the picture below, there is a problem from an old math book that proves hard for adults to solve. The only rule: you cannot use a calculator.

What do you think is the answer?

Don’t stress, look carefully and try to figure out the proper method to get the right answer.

Take your time to solve it. This is not a competition. As long as you get the right answer, that’s all that matters.

Below the next picture, you can see the answer.

Time for the answer

The correct answer is 104.

How did we get there?

Like this:

First, you solve the multiplication 25 x 0, which equals 0.

Then we solve the rest: 50 + 50 – 0 + 2 + 2 = 104.
