New Research: People who put up their Christmas decorations early are happier

We are a few days away from Christmas, and even though 2020 has not been particularly a great year, the festive mood gives us hope that things will soon take a positive turn.

Christmas is the favorite holiday of many. We’ll finally have an excuse to see our loved ones (while taking the proper precautions), have time off work, eat plenty of good food – and open gifts from Santa himself!

As wonderful as Christmas may be, it requires some preparation. The Christmas dinner, organizing the entire family, and even the decorations require plenty of work. But for many, decorating is the best part of Christmas. They have waited all year to let their imagination (and wallets) go.

Besides, according to researchers, it is a sign of a healthy mind to be excited about Christmas decorations. It means that you are happy.

According to psychology expert Steve McKeown, people who decorate Christmas early in the year are happier, reports Unilad, the Independent, and Business Insider, among others.

Get in touch with your inner child

According to McKeown, putting up the Christmas decorations early indicates that you are in touch with your inner child. The ornaments, lights, and colors remind us of our childhood and evoke nostalgic memories.

We get the opportunity to remember simpler times, when our job was to have fun and explore.

“Although there could be a number of symptomatic reasons why someone would want to obsessively put up decorations early, most commonly for nostalgic reasons either to relive the magic or to compensate for past neglect,” said Steve McKeown to Unilad.

Decorations bring “Magical emotions”

“In a world full of stress and anxiety, people like to associate to things that make them happy, and Christmas decorations evoke those strong feelings of the childhood.

“Decorations are simply an anchor or pathway to those old childhood magical emotions of excitement. So putting up those Christmas decorations early extends the excitement!” McKeown tells Unilad.

So don’t be ashamed if you feel you are decorating for Christmas too early – it’s just proof that you are happy and in touch with your inner child!
