Research confirms: People who put up Christmas decorations early are happier

Christmas, to me, means a wonderful feast with the people you love. A time of kindness, friendship, and consideration. The idea of Santa visiting us, the Christmas dinner, and everything else, is meant to spread positivity and happiness.

In fact, I think the best part is the preparation itself. From dressing up for the occasion to preparing the feast and even decorating the Christmas tree. It gets you in the right mood for the big day, making the first of the last few days of the year, a memorable one.

For this reason, I know that many people are as excited as I am, even though I know I’m still far away from watching the “Christmas cartoons”, as it’s a bit too early. However, there is some exciting news for all of us Christmas lovers.

A study led by psychology expert Steve McKeown, claims that people who start putting up Christmas decorations early are happier and have a better relationship with their “inner child”, as several major media – including Unilad, Independent and Business Insider – have recently reported.

“There could be several reasons”

He believes that decorating for Christmas reminds us of our childhood and gives us a nostalgic feeling.

“Although there could be a number of symptomatic reasons why someone would want to obsessively put up decorations early, most commonly for nostalgic reasons either to relive the magic or to compensate for past neglect”, says Steve McKeown to Unilad.

Steve is the founder of the MindFixers organization and The McKeown Clinic. Furthermore, he is also behind several major research projects and is a well-known name in the psychology world.

“In a world full of stress and anxiety people like to associate to things that make them happy and Christmas decorations evoke those strong feelings of the childhood”, he says.

A hint of happiness

McKeown continues:

“Decorations are simply an anchor or pathway to those old childhood magical emotions of excitement. So putting up those Christmas decorations early extend the excitement!”
