Women live longer lives than men, and that’s a fact. In the Western world, the difference is about 3 years. On average, women live to be 82 years old, while men have to make do with 79.
It might not sound fair – but it’s all due to genetics and lifestyle.
Men generally lead more unhealthy lives. Naturally, this doesn’t apply to all people, it’s just the societal average. However, there are a few small tricks you can use to live longer!
To help men lives as long and happy lives as women (inspired by the New York Post), we’ve listed 6 scientifically proven ways of making sure you live longer!
1. Staring at boobs
It may seem controversial and taboo, but staring at boobs creates a positive mindset in men. Funnily enough, the same thing happens when they look at cute animals.
In 2012, Archives of Internal Medicine published a study that looked at the effects positive thinking had on men’s health. More than half of the patients with coronary artery disease improved their life quality by writing down positive thoughts every morning.
Those who didn’t keep notes ended up being more unhappy. The same thing happened to men with high blood pressure.
2. Having lots of sex
This is something every man wants to hear, but it’s actually scientifically proven. A study in the BMJ found that sex could decrease a man’s mortality rate by as much as 50 percent.
This is mostly because having sex promotes physical well-being, as well as helping in relieving stress, which can reduce the likeliness of getting ill.
And on top of that, having sex releases serotonin – a “happy” hormone – which makes us feel better. In the study, life expectancy increased by 3 to 8 years in the group that reported more orgasms.
3. Getting married
Maybe you weren’t expecting this one. Especially if you’re one of those who refer to their wife as their “ball and chain” – but married men do live longer. However, it also depends on how old they are when they get married.
A survey of more than 127,000 Americans found that men who got married after 25 were likely to live longer than those who married young.
Researchers have questioned whether healthy men are more likely to marry than men with health problems, but it turns out that unhealthy men actually marry earlier. They are also less likely to divorce, and are more likely to remarry after divorce or being widowed than healthy men.
4. Having kids
This one seems pretty logical, given the previous point. Men who marry and have kids live longer than those who don’t.
A study in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health found that when parents reached age 60, men with kids saw their life expectancy go up 2 years while women increased by 1.5 years.
By the age of 80, men with kids can expect to live 8 months longer than those without kids.
5. Be responsible
Feeling a sense of responsibility can do wonders. A study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology discovered that older people in nursing homes who were given a plant to care for had improved socialization, alertness and general function.
Perhaps that is one of the reasons why having kids is good for you.
6. Get a “dad bod”
Most men gain a bit of weight after they have kids, but that is not necessarily a bad thing.
A book called “How Men Age” argues that tubby men are less likely to suffer a heart attack or prostate cancer and are more likely to invest their time in their children.
