McDonald’s cuts down farmers’ trees to make room for their giant billboard

You have to respect the people around you, no matter how rich you are or how big your company is. If you don’t think about how your actions will affect others, you might make a few enemies without realizing it.

This was the case for the owners of a McDonald’s franchise. They wanted to bring more visitors to their new restaurant in Hampshire, England, so they erected a giant sign aimed at the cars passing on the road nearby.

However, they realized the trees from the neighbor’s land completely blocked the sign. Their conclusion was to cut all the plants obstructing the view – without even checking if they had the right to do so.

Something they would soon come to regret.

You can see what the sign looked like when McDonald’s first put it up in the picture below. Well, if you don’t see it, that’s because of all the trees in the way. So the only thing actually visible was the Texaco logo at the very top.

Therefore, the franchise owners decided to cut down all the plants getting in the way of their sign. However, they did so without asking the owner of all that vegetation.

Their solution made it worse

However, it did not take long before the sign was blocked again – by a tower of hay bales.

The owner of the land, a seasoned farmer, swiftly avenged his trees, and his retribution was cheered all over social media. Many thought it served McDonald’s right because they cut down the farmer’s hedges without asking permission.

A simple question might have solved this problem, but now the expensive sign is even less visible than before. The farmer knew exactly where to punch!

What would you do if you were in the farmer’s shoes? Did McDonald’s have the right to cut the trees?
