According to the recognized sleep researcher Jim Horne, women need more sleep than men – because they use their brains more than men on an average day, wrote the British newspaper Metro.
Jim Horne works at the sleep research institute at Loughborough University in the UK – and he firmly believes that women, in general, need more sleep than men. Girls’ health is also more affected by sleep deprivation, he claims.
The reason is in our brains
There is research that backs up what Jim Horne said, according to the Independent. The study shows that women who are sleep deprived, run an increased risk of being hostile, and feeling angry or depressed.
“In contrast, these feelings were not associated with the same degree of sleep disruption in men,” Horne told Metro.
The reason is in the difference in our brains. Women’s brains are, simply put, more complex than men’s, if you look at the statistics.
“The more of your brain you use during the day, the more of it that needs to recover and, consequently, the more sleep you need. Women tend to multi-task and are flexible – and so they use more of their actual brain than men do. Because of that, their sleep need is greater,” said Horne.
Women deserve more sleep
A man who has a complex job, for example, may also need more sleep than the average male.
“Though probably still not as much as a woman,” added Horne.
